Using AI with maker industries
Unit 1 – Designing objects with AI
Lesson 2: Generating AI images of your ideas

Often seeing an idea helps spark more ideas, or helps you decide what you do and don’t like. You can use an AI image generator to create images for your ideas, to help you imagine what it might look like.
INTERACTIVE
Select 3-5 of your best ideas from the last lesson. Construct a prompt from each one for your favourite AI image generator. Make sure to add important details into the prompt. It helps to add detail about the type of material you will use too.
As a reminder, here are some AI image generators:
-
Bing Image https://www.bing.com/images
-
Stable Diffusion https://stablediffusionweb.com/#demo
-
Leonardo https://leonardo.ai/

For example:
Prompt (Leonardo.ai): A fancy wooden snack plate where the lazer cut pattern shows a cartoon grizzly bear
Prompt (Leonardo.ai): A set of sleek modern art drinks coasters with names on them
Prompt (Leonardo.ai): A set of modern art coasters modelled on Piet Mondrian. They are made out of tough fabric and sewn along the edges.
Prompt (Leonardo.ai): A haute couture style table stand for a wireless speaker
Spend some time sorting and discussing your ideas before you finally choose one to move forwards with. It should help to show the images to other people so that they can imagine what you’re aiming for.
Make sure to note down your thoughts and other people’s opinions on your whiteboard. This will help you in the future if you need to come back to these notes.

NOTE
You may remember from previous discussions that AI image generators can only work because they have been trained on huge datasets of images. Some of these images could be from personal or commercial projects, so it is important to treat the images you generate in this lesson as inspiration, not as a final product. This means you will be creating your own unique work. You can treat the images in this lesson like you would images in an art gallery - great for inspiration but not appropriate to copy directly.
